Why Storylines Matter In Video Games?

Storyline, in the context of video games and game-playing, usually refers to the sequence of how a game’s plot progresses. In other words, the “plot” of the story told through progressing levels. Of course this is all dependent on the genre you enjoy the most.

Importance of a storyline

It’s often said that a good narrative contributes to a more immersive gaming experience whether it’s an action-packed shooter game or a calm, unwinding puzzle game. After all, what is a game without a story to tell?

A good story can add immersion and engage players in a way that simply playing a game cannot. Navigating the experience can make the players feel emotionally attached to the characters and more invested in the gaming world. A strong story can be the difference between an ordinary game and one that is truly memorable.

Of course, not every game needs an incredible, Oscar-worthy narrative or storyline. Some games are perfectly fine without one. But for those games that do rely on a story, it’s important to get it just right. After all, a bad story can ruin an otherwise great game.

How storylines have evolved throughout time

It’s no secret that video games have come a long way since their humble beginnings. In the early days of gaming, storylines were simplistic and often non-existent. Games were more about gameplay and less about the narrative.

Classic games from the 80’s like Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Q*Bert, Joust, Spy Hunter, Paperboy, Tetris, and Donkey Kong had no story whatsoever. The games were just for entertainment and the missions at the most were casual.
